Around here most alfalfa has been seeded in early spring along with oats as a "nurse" crop. As I recall, the oats are taken off for hay at about 60 days. Alfalfa should have a good start by then. No spray required. Haying gets the oats off so it doesn't shade out the alfalfa and also provides some feed.
