Subject: RE: R-calf and HSUS? Wal-Mart, COOL & "blockchain"

Driftless SW Wisconsin

Thank you for the link to the Forbes article.

It sounds like this "blockchain" techno speak jargon is just installing RFID tags in calves (as many of us on NAT have been doing for years) and having a central registry to record calves movements through the system to the carcass hanging on the rail. The idea being that these age and source verified cattle are worth more to the end consumer.

Looks like some big names are trying to host (smell $$?) what appears to be a simple data base of RFID  numbers and movements...from the Forbes article:

With the first batch of RFID chips in place, BeefChain cofounders Rob Jennings and Tony Rose have joined forces with former Morgan Stanley managing director and former president of blockchain startup Symbiont, Caitlin Long, to help organize the next steps.

First on the list, is to select a blockchain. Among the top contender to serve the cattle supply-chain use case is a subset of the technology working on custom “track and trace” solutions, according to Long. For example, German software giant SAP earlier this week announced it’s own track-and-trace solution, and Big Four accounting firm Deloitte’s former blockchain boss is building a solution using Ethereum to track the defense industry supply chain.

Institutional investors are also taking an interest in the space, with Fidelity Investments joining a $10.4 million Series A in supply-chain startup Everledger and Pantera Capital adding to $12 million in seed funding for Chronicled, also tackling blockchain’s supply chain use-case. Even Ethereum cofounder Gavin Wood has joined the fray, launching his own supply-chain outfit called Ambrosus, aimed specifically at food safety.

While the BeefChain founders say the process of selecting a platform and integrating it with the RFID chips could still be months away, Long further elaborated on why it was imperative to tag the calves now.

The hardest part of this project is tagging the calves because time is of the essence,” said Long, who is a Wyoming native and helped jumpstart the blockchain bills. “If Ogden doesn’t tag now, it would mean waiting a whole year until the next calving season begins.” [emphasis mine]
