Answer these questions first.

1. How big of hit will you take on your hay equipment, be realistic about value.

2. Can you really buy the quality of hay you need? (I will admit buying in right times is very cost effective) But I see a lot of crap hay made by people that must not know hay.

3. If you have some extra growth, can you get someone to make hay for you, in a timely manner?(here being smaller, very hard to get timely custom work)

I would think if your equipment is paid for try it first before you sell. But on the other hand, if you bought hay equipment new you may take a bath.

This year was an example, everyone I knew thought they had plenty of hay going into winter, long wet winter spring with late green up made people scramble late February-March. Crappy round bales that couldn't sell in fall for $40 went for over $100, even up to $140 for nice quality at the auctions.
