NE Iowa
Relying on AI only and no clean-up bull is difficult even if only be a few head. One option is to get some late summer / fall calving cows and share a bull with a neighbor. We used to let a neighbor borrow one of our bulls in the winter. As long as they fed him well and kept him for 5-6 months we didn't charge him. Not sure what part of eastern Iowa you are from but I would probably loan one of my black Simmentals out for the winter. We are north of Dubuque about 10 miles.
