Bremen, KS | This why we quit planting sunflowers after wheat a few years ago. When Beattie Coop was merged into Farmers Cooperative a few years ago, we suspected that taking sunflowers to Beattie would no longer be an option and true to our suspicions, sunflowers are no longer on the board. Farmers Cooperative is doing a similar thing with wheat by adjusting the basis to "force" wheat be taken to Hanover. Wheat acres have reduced considerably here over the past decade as we've gone from being primarily a wheat and milo area 25 years ago to being primarily corn and beans, so I can understand the thinking of limiting the amount of wheat they have to store and haul at smaller locations and using the basis to "encourage" the farmer into incurring the transportation costs. Today we hope to start cutting wheat on a farm a couple of miles from FC's Herkimer location but the basis menas we'll drive past it and go to Hanover ourselves. Not all that long ago we simply hauled to the closest location.
On the plus side, the mergers of the local coops into FC has resulted in improved facilities in this area which were showing their age. On farm storage is not as prevalent here as other places as elevators were typically only a few miles away. That too will likely change over the next decade.
