No it doesn't make any sense. I even had our local NRCS guy agree with the very same statement. He told me that the 40-50 cow model is ideal, sustainable, and the most efficient use of the land that there is in this area. And that the corn/soy thing is not the most efficient use of the land in this area. The chickens will come home to roost someday, but I fear it will be too late. Your statement about these mega dairies over applying manure is also very true and going to end up being a real problem down the road. It seems all most care about nowadays is the almighty dollar, period!

And the other bad effect of this is so many of these corn bean guys have turned into some of the most haughty and arrogant people I have ever known.
