We had a neighbor who raised lots of hogs in the 70s and 80s and never owned a manure spreader.  He had a 3 point hitch blade and a ditch to push into.  Again, there are some problems and abuses with more modern methods but it's also disingenuous of the people who turn a blind eye to things that were done wrong with the old ways.
