Wife and I made the same trip about 2 years ago. Went from Chicago to Bar Harbor with stops in between.
Ford's museum in Dearborn, Finger Lakes and Ithaca NY, Adirondacks and Lake Placid. Lot of neat little towns if you pick up Hwy 2 in Vermont and take that to Bangor . Drive to the top of Mt Washington in NH, which is off

Bar Harbor and Acadia National park is one neat place. Hope you like lobster, its sold everywhere.
