Subject: RE: Really sad dairy article

Pierce county WI
I still can't quite wrap my head around how many dairies have stopped in my area in the last 20 years. I grew up dairying, and dairied on my own for about 7 years. I am lucky that I milked cows to farm, more than I only loved dairy. I was happy to sell my cows and continue to farm row crops. I liked my cows, but I'm happier. I do miss milking cows on cold, snowy days and chopping corn silage. Hopefully there will be markets for family farm identity preserved dairy. As far as commercial class 1, 2, or 3 production? Looks like it's a race to become the low cost producer. Why else are they building large water intensive livestock operations in the desert? Wait, that doesn't make sense. Then areas with abundant rain and natural topography for forage and pasture production are being row cropped? Doesn't make sense. Hasn't made sense for a long time. I really hope things turn out for these guys. Not just for them, but I still have friends that milk.
