When we stand back and look it's no different than what has happened in other farming sectors.

How many acres did the typical family farm in your area operate in the 70's?
How about the 50's?

Every farm here had 100 acres divided into small fields/pastures/woodlots/swamp.
The barn likely had a couple cows, a few pigs and a few chickens.
The families these farms supported were typically large. Some also had a hired man, or at least brought on seasonal help.
Can anyone say threshing bee?

By the 70's there was some specialization. The 'bigger' farmers might have been running 3 -500 acres.
The BTO's of the day might have been 1000 or 1200, but I recall a lot of them the 'tipped over' when times got a little tougher.
