NE Oregon | The Great Depression May not have been caused by Smoot-Hawley, but those tariffs, and the retaliation that predictably happened in response by other countries prolonged the Great Depression because of stagnate trade.
You point out that America had a trade surplus during the GT, and I would surely not call that good times in America. So wouldn’t that be evidence against pulling tariff stunts with our allies and trading partners in order to stop having a trade deficits? I would much rather live in America today than in the ‘30’s.
I am a free trade believer. I get the use of tariff threats with free trade as the goal. I just haven’t seen that in the presidents rhetoric, so I have concerns about his ideas of tariffs, and his beliefs about trade in general. | |
