North Dakota | I could be a smart alec and tell you to ask a lawyer.
In town we have a Canadian Pacific line with overpasses on both north/south and east/west highways. It is routine to see trains across the other crossings for 24 to 48 hours without them splitting the train. It only causes a problem when the ambulance or fire truck needs to get across. They always use the overpasses even when another crossing would be shorter.
A few years ago they were replacing one of the overpasses and CP agreed to not block the crossing on the detour. Only once they had it blocked for over a few minutes. After about 30 minutes the trucks were backed up about 10 blocks and the sheriff makes a call, never happened after that.
I’m sure there are laws about trains blocking a crossing but try to get it enforced would be something I don’t think many sheriffs would get in to with the railroad. | |
