Subject: RE: Going to Be Interesting--Ford's Changing Direction

Years ago I thought Chrysler should have phased out the sedan models, as #3 domestic (and 5 or 6 overall) and just concentrate on the popular catagories. Subaru learned that - stop trying to compete in the basic econobox market when they're a distant 5th for Japanese makes sold here. They switched to 4WD vehicles exclusively -- and cashflow and share improved.

It was the market for police vehicles that drove the big RWD sedans demise. The Ford Crown Victoria (built in Canada) was the last available in that catagory, so it become the de facto police car all over. As this happened, sales to regular consumers tanked, because nobody wanted "to look like they were driving their family around in a police car." The LEO market alone was not enough to sustain this model, especially with any "Made in USA " procurement requirments, so that last one is gone.
