manitoba | I looked at the one you posted yesterday and could not tell if the 2 halves of the head catch are timed with a roller chain, 2 cables, or 2 bars. I built 3 head gates the first one was a modified copy of one with bars and the problem with hip catches is real. the other 2 I built have roller chain and sprockets and they both open wide enough for any cow to walk through with the gate opened past the catch position. The last head gate I built in approx 1995 and still use it. From 1995 till 2015 we averaged 200 cow calf and backgrounded 3/4 of our calves. All our treatments preg checking and vacinations were done in this chute, and we had no plans to change the chute or head gate. We normally have someone run the head gate rather than use it as a self catch.
