No, you are not missing anything. The only way to truly capture all the carry is to sell it for January payment the same day you store it. If the bid for January is higher than the cost of storage then the carry in the market pays for the storage.
But, what the heck do I know? If I knew anything I wouldn't still be holding old crop corn!
