| Cri, is it possible your envelope tray has a sensor to detect if envelopes are loaded in the printer? If so, whenever envelopes are loaded it might cause it to default to printing on them if that is truly tray 1.
Have you tried printing from a normal document without envelopes loaded? or is this a special tray that only takes envelopes? If it is a special tray, you might be able to go into the printer driver properties and set it to default to Tray 2.
You could go to www.hp.com and look in their support section. I did and searched for an HP 4100 printer and got a bit of troubleshooting information including one on Paperfeed issues.
