Late last winter I watched land that we were previously involved with sell for 35-45% of what it would have 3-4 years ago. If you haven't seen that, your locale has not truly seen some tough years. Peak rent here is no longer happening outside of the mega farms who are driven by coop/outside financing. Otherwise, yeah it is high, but you need to spread fixed costs out enough to make them work. We've found lower priced corn seed to help. If the big boys don't want to play ball, so what? Yeah, we miss out on the December 20th low interest financing but when you cut seed cost by 40% who cares.
