East Central Ia
There are several ways to skin a cat... in the end it's net return per acre that matters.

If that means higher gross, similar net, but with higher risk what you are suggesting makes perfect business sense. But what comes with higher risk is usually a chance for higher reward. Some people want to manage that higher risk level for the chance at a higher reward. Some want to lower risk and are content with a lower reward.

But it all comes down to net per acre, and how much risk you want to manage.

If there are things you were doing in the past that aren't giving you the return you want then why we're doing them in the first place?

Granted some things pencil a good ROI at $5 corn but not at $3 corn... those are the things that need looked at. Making a whole hog approach to cost cutting seems likely to switch your risk from making money/breaking even with a chance to make good money... to making money/breaking even with a chance to lose money!
