Subject: RE: Windrows?

Southern Indiana
We run around 120 cows on roughly 250 acres, half spring calving and half fall. 2/3 is permanent pasture, meaning kind of rough, and the other 1/3 getcut for hay, then fertilized and pastured. We do rotational grazing and background the calves on baleage. If we did set aside a couple fields for stockpiling, we are usually feeding some hay by the 1st of Nov. If we turned into stockpiled fields I'm pretty sure they'd have it picked down by Thanksgiving. I'm just saying you'd need an awful lot of acres to stockpile enough to run through most of the winter. If I had that many more acres I'd be tempted to expand the cow herd. Maybe I'm thinking wrong but as long as it costs less than a dollar to produce a dollars worth of calf then bigger checks will always be better than smaller.
