When doing rough yield checks, I never count the bottom kernel or the top 3 or 4. For one, there are rarely the same around at the bottom or the top than there are in the middle. Secondly, unless you have a magic combine, there is going to field/header loss and the tiny top kernels are more than likely thrown out the back. I've read on here before where people have ears that are 50 long and 18 around, they just "hope they get the rain to fill all 50 kernels". Show me an ear that is a true 50 long and 18 round. We rarely hit 40 long, but many 18's and 20's in ECIL. I have found a 24 around before.

If you are getting ears that are 50 long it's not thick enough. One year we had one number that was mainly 14-16 around(and a few 12s) and in the low 30s long and the other side of the planter that number had almost all 18-20x40s and some 22s. The one with the more kernels got thumped by about 12 bpa over the entire field.

Kernel counts are pretty pointless. I wait until black layer. Pick the same random ears(so there is no cherry picking) in a row on 1/1000 of an acre, shell them, moisture check them, weigh it and take subtract the weight of the extra water down to 15%. Very very accurate way to check.
