Stockbridge, MI | After running a ton of research plots on this topic in Michigan and being involved with lots of other plots across the country, my feeling is that your planting population needs to factor in your environment and management. It's all a sliding scale. On average ground, 100k plants at harvest seems to usually hit max yield. It's the harvest pop you should target, then work backward to get there. On better ground, 80k at harvest is enough, on poorer ground, you'll need to go higher. The better seed placement and spacing with a planter means seeding rates can be lower compared to a drill. Increase seeding rates a bit in no-till compared to tilled conditions. Increase rates if you get late in the season. Individual varieties can have difference responses as well. So it's hard to just throw out a seeding rate for all conditions. I'm dropping around 140k in twin-row, strip tilled conditions as my base rate, then modifying from there. | |
