I am no epidemiologist, but my guess is that it's like, a middle-aged farmer living and working on the farm is much less likely to get the flu than his or her kid at college living and eating with thousands of others in relatively confined spaces. Population density increases frequency of transmission vector, and it is probably an exponential effect.
