South Central Kansas | Got a call from a distant neighbor last night who also raises certified seed wheat. After visiting a while he said he called to see if I had any yellow looking wheat. Of course I told him I did. He said one farmer found what he thought was brown wheat mites in his damaged fields. Couldnt find them at first, but after digging around and looking closer he thought that was what was turning his wheat yellow.
The worst looking wheat seems to be on soybean stubble and wheat that is no-tilled into last year's stubble. My worst wheat is where the separator ran last year. I took a close look this morning and I still can find any mites. Mine still looks like freeze damage to me. Some of the fields have a pattern that follows draws and terrace bottoms, some areas are sporadic. Never seen anything like this in my 46 years of farming.
