If he cut it for fire wood you will have a hard time proving it. If he is an honest man he probably didn't realize they were trees of value. If he is like many that ask to cut fire wood on our land they are not here to cut fire wood. They are up to other things and just want an excuse to be there if they are caught.
I had a tree that size. They came and got just the one tree and paid $1500 for it. If they came for just the one you know it was worth a lot more than $1500! As others have said treble damages is the law. A landlord had that happen to him he ended up with $500 for probably a dozen trees.
