I don't think his play hedge is pure speculation. I think if you know you are going to farm in 2017 and beyond it makes a lot of sense to double up some sales in one year with a plan to roll later when there is a carry or an inverse has gone away. I think that is less speculation than signing a 5 year lease to rent land without having any idea what the crop prices will be.
