An elderly man who lived not far from here was not so fortunate several years ago. He was heading to a relative's and never arrived. My brother and I found his car on a mud road less than a couple of miles from his farm. Seems he got stuck and worked it around to the point it caught fire. He took off walking, became disoriented, and succumbed to subfreezing temperatures and found in a nearby creek. I don't know if he had a cell phone. If an elderly family member has a cell phone, make sure they use it regularly so when they really need it their habit will kick in and they'll use it. To never use it means that in an emergency it may be forgotten or will just be another unfamiliar and confusing item.
