Alan. we changed our early 5488 from round to square and I would say go for it. We used a 1844 cotton picker axle bolster and all. You will have to drill 4 holes in the top of the bolster and tap them and they are metric, not a big deal. but that is all that is required to make the cotton picker bolster bolt in. Our round axle was worn at the rear bolster pivot enough that the pin would work itself out and to not change the bolster would have required us to drill and bush that hole. The square axle was tight and I think put together a better way but would have to look again to remember, Also more and better placement of the grease zerks, because after seeing the square axle we put some additional zerks in our 5088 round axle. The steering motor is different between the two axles but we did not change ours and get along fine but it steers so easily we don't mind an extra turn. In retrospect .it is easy to see why the square axle adds about $5000 to the tractor value.
