It's a color thing. I can't explain it, but around here the JD guys tend to leave the auger out and IH guys tend to fold it back in.

Personally I can't see a reason to leave it out exposing you to all kinds of embarassing and expensive damage when all you have to do is lift one finger and touch the switch to fold it in. It even stops automatically when folded up. Course that's on a red combine. Maybe it is just too hard to do on a green one.
