They are right - most options do expire worthless - if you use options you either need to thoroughly educate yourself first on how to manage them, or hire a broker or advisory service to help you. When words like delta, volume, open interest, bid/ask, volatility, strike price, fixed risk versus variable - start to land home - you should be okay to trade on your own.
