MLB, as well as the NFL, NHL, and NBA, black out games that aren't sold out in a certain radius from the stadium. It is to prevent people from staying hoe and watching for free.
While this is true, I think they go overboard. My example is Chicago Blackhawks and Minnesota Wild hockey. They black it out almost every game, I live in Ames, IA so that's a 4 hour haul to the wild and over 6 to Chicago, do the really think I'm gonna get in the car and drive out to see the game live. All they are doing is keeping people away that won't go to the game anyway.
