When the AF combines first came out it was thought that the rotor did enough grinding of the straw that you wouldn't need a chopper.
Once guys started trying to cut down on tillage passes, mainly not disking every acre of bean stubble, it became necessary/desirable to have a chopper.
If you don't need a chopper, there wasn't a reason to spend the money on the option as it probably wasn't cheap and they suck up a lot of horsepower.
Around here, a combine without a chopper is worth considerably less than a similar machine with a chopper.
Honestly, if there were two similarly equipped and good conditioned 3000 hr 1660's parked next to each other on a sale here with the only difference being chopper vs no chopper, I'd expect the one with the chopper to sell in the $10k range and the one without a chopper struggle to get a bid at $5k.
