Subject: RE: 854 rogator hydraulic rate controll not working

Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn.
First step. Check the settings for boom widths, speed cal, meter cal, val cal Target Rate 1, Target Rate 2 etc. They may have gotten changed.

Are you seeing a displayed rate that is reasonable? If yes, then there is a problem with the automatic control section within the controller if you can control it manually. Flip the Rate 1/Rate 2/MANual switch back and forth several times, the switch may have gotten corroded.

If the displayed rate is zero, then push the Vol/Min key on the bottom row of keys while spraying. This should show the flow rate through the flow meter whether you are moving or not. Also check the Area/hr key on the bottom row of keys while moving and spraying. One or the other of these will show zero.

If the Vol/min is zero and the meter cal is correct, then the problem is within the flow meter itself or the wiring between it and the controller. This could be as simple as a stuck turbine in the flow meter due to debris or some other more serious problem.

If the Vol/min is reasonable, then check the Area/hr. If the Area/hr is zero, then check the speed key. If the speed is zero, the problem is with the speed sensor itself or its wiring. You indicate that you finished by watching the speed, was the speed on the 460 or the corner display? If the Area/hr is zero but the speed on the controller is reasonable then the problem is with the boom widths or boom sense. Boom sense means the system has a way of knowing which booms are on

With a 460, the OEM boom section switches do two things 1) they provide power or a trigger to actually open the boom valve(s) and 2) provide feedback to the 460 so that it "knows" which booms are ON and can do its "math" correctly. It is possible that the wires that lead back to the 460 for boom sense have been damaged. It is also possible that internally there is a problem with boom sense. There are some internal diodes that can be damaged which can cause this result.

Here's how I check for proper boom sense: Put in a width of 100 for boom 1, 200 for boom 2, 300 for boom 3 etc. With the engine off, push the self-test key and enter in a speed of 10.0 MPH. Now with boom 1 only ON, flip on the Master switch and watch the Area/hr. It should show 10.1 acres/hr. Next flip boom 1 OFF and boom 2 ON, the Area/hr should now show 20.2 acres/hr. Repeat this for each boom section. It is not necessary to be spraying to perform this test.

If the Area/hr does not come out as described above, I would try to find another Raven display (this could be a 440, 450 or 460) and repeat the test. With the 440 or 450 leave the boom switches on the display set to OFF and use the OEM switches as usual. This should help decide if the boom sense problem is within the controller or external wiring.
