I know exactly what you mean.
That said, Two half links wont hurt. You can build a whole chain out of half links if you want to with no harm.
Sometimes on some machines where there is critical tightening issues the bearing behind the sprocket is mounted with slotted holes and you can slip the shaft one way or another to take up some slack with the shortest chain possible.
Years ago....LIKE A lifetime back in time I remember ,Our old Hutchinson auger was made with no tightener, but the upper bearings were slotted in the mounting to tighten.Same deal, too tight without half link and too loose with it, then I saw the slots...... and the light bulb of simplicity went on...and I said to myself......"NOW WHY DIDN'T I THING OF THAT ?"
