I'd just skip right to a 4840. Then you got lots of power, and as far as nimble, they're 2wd and have cutting brakes, will spin right around. Smoother ride due to longer wheel base and you get a fuel tank that will last all day.

To the OP. A 4640 has the same wheelbase as the 4840, but has a 5 inch longer hood on account of having a 20 gallon larger fuel tank. A 4840 has a beefed up transmission and final drives compared to a 4640. Rated 24 hp. more than a 4640.

One word of caution on a 4840. In our area, most of the 46 and 4840 tractors come in from the west. I've seen more issues with 4840 final drives than with the 4640. Most of the western 4640 tractors I've dynoed turned about 170ish hp.which is pretty normal unless they're getting tired. Most western 4840 tractors I've been around had 225+. I'm thinking possibly more of the 48's were used for heavy tillage than 46's.

Moral of the story, avoid the consignment sale bargains, and try hard to find one with a verified history. A 48 with 10k hours of doing heavy tillage with its tail twisted could be a money pit.

Maintenance and history are always an important factor when purchasing used equipment, particularly as age and hours increase. Personally, I won't purchase an older tractor with an unknown history. Too risky, IMO.

Good luck!
