Central Nebraska

JoeR - 5/16/2016 23:09 Does anyone have several different closing wheels that they swap on and off depending on conditions? We are running one OEM rubber and one Schlegel per row now. Having a hard time getting the trench to close in some very hard no till corn stalks today. Going to toss the other rubber wheels in the pickup tomorrow just in case...moving to a way different soil type and conventional tillage for a few acres so I'm not sure what's going to happen. I've been happy with this setup the past couple years but think it could be better this year...almost needs to be more aggressive in no till but seems just about right for tilled ground. Thinking maybe of having a set of spiked/curved/etc wheels on hand as well to swap out quick if need be...but that's a lot of $ sitting on the shelf if they only get used once every 5 years too... We've had an unusually large amount of rain the past few weeks which has made the ground pretty hard. Even stuff that had been worked is pretty tough.

We've been running Lofquist wheels (lofquistwelding.com) for several years.  This year in beans going into disced bean ground we had issues with the fingers wanting to pull the seed out of the ground because everything was so soft.  We have to plant seed corn in similar conditions shortly and are going to put one rubber wheel back on to help stabilize and control the depth of the closing wheel.
