Its nice to learn what is or isn't working in different areas. I would think a realy thin cover of rye like 10-20 # with some N on it to get established. and then in the spring there will be plent of air movement between the rye. I observed a lot the rye standing is like a straw wicking away moisture but on your soils I wouldn't want 1 bhl of rye to get really tall on it!.
