Subject: RE: Starter, what is it?

North Liberty and South Bend, Indiana
Ive had yield checks where no starter (200 lbs 16-20-0-4) was applied, both on purpose and accident. Both times the sidedressed N rate was bumped up to get a full equal rate across the field. Once we lost 10 bpa and once 30 bpa. That was according to a weigh wagon, was before we had a yield monitor. We do have some coarse sand/gravel where those numbers came from. I can guess weather played a part in the difference in yield losses, was in two consecutive years. Where the starter was not applied the corn never caught up, height, color, and obviously yield.
