I split the old rows. Going at an angle you have all the gauge wheels bouncing across the old rows which doesnt provide very good ride for the row units. I never seem to get decent stand in the old row either.

Depending on tractor tire spacing, going straight you could always be running on stalks which chews them up pretty good. Much harder on planter tires. Running at angle isnt much better but atleast you are off them at times. Leaving the stalks as tall as possible helps.
