Remsen, IA
We get around 4 to 5 5x6 bales per acre in good stalks behind the MC rotary scythe. We run 567 balers at about 12 mph and the 50 bales/hour is pretty normal unless the corn was short and thin. With really good running, 70 is possible.

To the original question. We like the scythe because it chops the stalks for better bedding and the baler teeth don't have to fight all those root stumps. If you hold it up off the ground, the sythe won't have any dirt in the windrow like the rake does. Around here we have troubles getting the stalks dry enough to keep in a big square so not many of those get done anymore. Most guys put manure back out where we did the baling so leaving stalks for organic matter isn't an issue although leaving strips between passes for erosion control seems good to me.
