Not sure on the Dawns, but I had a zerk on my neighbor's trash whipper that wouldn't take grease.  I figured that the bearing cavity might be full of crud, so I took it apart.  Turns out that the units had sealed bearings in them and all the grease was doing was filling up the casting.  No way any grease could possibly have gotten into the bearings.
