You can feed a person for around $60 a year - maybe $100 for organic calories. We choose to send those calories through animals - because it's delicious (But it's not necessary) .
There are a lot of "calories" that cows eat that people would find rather unpalatable. If the cows don't eat those calories and turn it into something humans will eat those calories would be wasted.
