Not saying that you should not do variable rate, but I think you should look at yield maps compared to soil productivity first. If you have soil types that are not producing up to their potential, then you first need to find the underlying problem. It might be fertility, but there are many things that are not related to fertility that can also cause yield issues; compaction, water issues (drainage or irrigation). So, IMHO, you need to look at this in a holistic way, because, if other issues are a root cause, you best soils, in potential, might be the worst yielding, there fore, when looking at a grid/management zone soil test, they would be the ares that are high in nutrients, but when overlaid with yield maps, would show low production. Make sure that you fix any underlying issues, so that each soil type can yield to it's full potential, then VRT.
