Your question is very open ended and honestly you could get a wide variety of good answers that could range from traditional NPK, soil type, tillage, drainage, and irrigation lines of thinking to thinking outside the box with alternatives to tillage and cover cropping, and to throwing the box away with the likes of Allan Savory, Elaine Ingham, Duane Beck, Gabe Brown, Neil Dennis, etc and focusing on soil life/health, surface litter/cover, plant roots, and animal impact. I personally think the answer is an ever evolving puzzle that is solved in the pieces of all of the above and no single piece of the puzzle will solve that puzzle.
