I've used it to keep them out of some spots like you are talking about. Yes the rain does wash it away and tub is probably the wrong word. I picked up a large container of it for a few bucks at the local BJ's wholesale place. It was about a quart sized I guess?
If you have a lot of area to cover maybe glue traps would be better?
