The 2 speed hydro is nothing more than an electro/hydraulic controlled swash plate in the hydro motor. In single speed hydros, the motor swash plate angle is fixed. By switching the 2 speed hydro you're simply changing this swash plate angle, which is what you do to the pump swash plate all day long when you change speed or direction. As the others have said, it is made to be switched back and forth on the go. If high side is too much of a load for it, you'll know once you get used to it. And it won't hurt a thing.

I wanted a 2 speed hydro for several years before I got one. I'd never be without it now. Transit is just too slow in the field in 2nd range and too fast in 3rd.
