NE Iowa | Most bred cows sold in Iowa started out as home-raised heifers. So they have no basis and selling them becomes 100% capital gains. So a lot of guys got in the habit of waiting until after Jan. 1st to sell them. At a typical salebarn they only have these special bred cow sales once a month. Through in a winter storm or cold weather in January and you end up with a bunch of cows sold in February. Its not about timing the market it is more about tax planning in my opinion. | |
