Near-north Ontario, French River | True winter kill is pretty rare, I don't think you have anything to worry about. Having said that if wheat is going to die off in the winter here in Ontario it will happen in March. Worst case scenario is temps warm up , but ground is still froze , and either a combination of rain or snow melt leads to water ponding. This is not normally a issue unless the ground remains froze ,the water can't get away and then you get another cold snap. The wheat ends up trapped under/in ice and is starved for oxygen...leading to death. That's what is commonly labeled as "winter kill " here, imho it's a misnomer. |
