Subject: RE: Canada Overtakes US on Wheat Exports

Pittsburg, Kansas
We only planted on landlords that insisted we plant some and we talked that down to one small landlord. Since we were planting one small field for that landlord, we also planted one more of our own just in case we changed our mind and wanted to keep some seed.

So we planted just enough to dirty one combine next summer. Will not even get the other combines out of the shed.

We have sworn off wheat more than once. The price gets high and we plant it once again. Then a year comes along like last year and we remember once again why we swore off planting it.

So yes, corn and beans till we loose our sanity again.

Once in a while wheat and double crop beans shoot out the lights. Everything goes just right on both crops and we make a ton of money. That keeps us planting the crap wheat another five years when we take enough yield penalty on the dc beans compared to full season beans only to offset any potential profit there could be on the wheat. So we work twice as hard for the same money. In general the landlords like the wheat/beans double crop deal. For one, unless we show them the figures, they do not think about the decreased yield they are getting on the bean crop most years. They only remember the perfect year when the double cropped beans yielded as well as full season beans. The second thing is the landlord does not pay for the expense of planting and harvesting two crops instead of one. So in general landlords on share rent agreements generally have a favorable view of wheat/double crop beans. We did our best to educate them otherwise this year.
