I bet there is somebody in town that doesn't lose a minute's sleep when they say "we need to up the taxes on farmland b/c of the damage it does to XYZ".

We can pick any one of a million arguments, I just fundamentally don't believe in gov't intervention.

As to the monopoly of big oil... If we had a reasonable EPA, I would bet that the cost to put up a new refinery would become much more palatable for increasing competition.
