In the world of precision machine tools the new equipment is in many cases worse than the old equipment. Weight matters in machine tools from both a vibration and thermal expansion standpoint. yet everyone wants to try to reduce machine weights to reduce costs.

Advances in technology have increased our ability to inspect and do QC but the most accurate machine tools of today are not substantially more accurate than they were 30-40 years ago.

The most accurate Japanese and German machining centers in the world still use hand scraping processes.

A well cared for machine will simply go obsolete on the electronic front.

A lot of that large line boring equipment like Cummins would use to bore the Cam and Crankshaft bores in a single setup simply does not exist anymore even though it is a super precise way to do it. In many automotive applications they would typically bore it halfway and rotate the block 180 degrees and bore it again.
